Do you know the signs of a dental emergency? If you suddenly experience tooth pain or notice that a tooth has been damaged, it may be a dental emergency. If so, contact our office right away.

Common dental emergencies include:

  • Abscessed tooth
  • Avulsed tooth
  • Damaged dental fillings/crowns/implants/bridges/dentures
  • Tooth fracture

Abscessed Tooth – You may have an abscessed tooth if you are experiencing severe tooth pain or gum swelling. This situation would likely require a root canal treatment if an infection is present. In short, a root canal removes the tooth pulp and eliminates the bacteria. The tooth is then sealed with a crown to prevent further damage.

Avulsed Tooth – A sports injury or accident can cause a tooth to become avulsed, or knocked out. If this happens, call us right away and bring in the tooth, if possible. Place the tooth in milk or water to preserve it. Avoid touching the root. Our dentists will try our best to save the tooth and reinsert it. If the tooth cannot be saved, tooth replacement is an option.

Damaged Dental Fillings/Crowns/Implants/Bridges/Dentures – A damaged crown, filling or other dental work can be painful.  It can also cause infection if not fixed right away. Let us know if your dental work loosens or breaks so we can take appropriate action.

Tooth Fracture – Contact us if you suffer a tooth fracture. While a tooth fracture may look more like a cosmetic issue, it can also affect your oral health. By fixing it quickly, we can prevent bacteria from forming inside the tooth. We can easily correct a minor fracture with composite-resin material. Moderate fractures with damage to the pulp may require a root canal and crown in order to save the tooth. Treatment recommendations will be discussed upon evaluation.
